Island Dispatches

The FEO Project’s Island Dispatches will feature in-depth written and visual pieces highlighting the work going on where we currently are, available on our website, via Substack, and on social media. Check back for our first edition from the coast of Maine this July.

Micro-grant program

The FEO Project intends to assist and expand the work of our partners by establishing a crowd-funded grant program that allows promising projects to receive financial support from our community of followers.

Potential partners

We’re building a list of potential partners in the North Atlantic and Caribbean — these aren’t existing partnerships, but just examples of the kind of work we’re hoping to focus on.

The Island Institute - Penobscot Bay, Maine

The Island Institute is pursuing community innovation for a stronger Maine coast, navigating climate and economic change with island and coastal communities to expand opportunities and deliver solutions. One project they’re known for is the Island Fellows program, where they place young people in residence on islands to pursue projects that island communities wish to implement.

Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

UINR is merging science and indigenous knowledge– “two-eyed seeing”- to ensure thriving fishery populations, clean drinking water, and marine water quality. Scientific research is guided by Mi'kmaq communities and elders, offering a new paradigm for environmental management

SARGAS - Grenada

SarGas converts invasive Sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean into renewable biogas and biofertilizer, enabling the sustainable transformation of small island nations’ energy and agricultural systems, while generating revenue from the seaweed currently choking beaches and damaging ecosystems throughout the region.

Casa PuebloPuerto Rico

Casa Pueblo is a community-based self-management project committed to appreciating and protecting natural, cultural, and human resources. One of their key projects is establishing a solar microgrid network for energy independence and resilience in extreme weather events.

Richmond Vale AcademySt. Vincent & the Grenadines

RVA is building a Pass-It-On Home Garden model that helps individuals grow their own food at home and pass practices along to their neighbors, setting communities up for food sovereignty & security. The organization aims to establish 1,000 such gardens on the island.

Barnes Hill Community Development Organization - Antigua

BHCDO is restoring the health and function of the local historic reservoir to increase drought resilience, while also making space for community events, visitors, and community gardens.
